How Quickly Dysport Produces Results
You will start to see the results of your Dysport treatment one to three days after the injections are administered. Other neurotoxic protein injections don’t start showing results until at least three days after injection. The final results are also visible faster than the final results of alternatives. Treatment with abobotulinumtoxinA shows ideal results after just two weeks. With alternatives, you could be waiting three weeks to see the final results of treatment.
Exercise Your Way to Faster Results
The easiest way to see the final results of your treatment faster is to exercise the facial muscles that were targeted during treatment. For example, if the corners of your eyes were treated for crow’s feet, squint and relax your eyes 40 times. Do this three times with a 10-minute break between sets of repetitions. For the best results, do this within the first four hours of treatment.
Exercising the targeted facial muscles helps the medication work its way deep into your skin and settle where it needs to be. An added benefit of exercising the targeted facial muscles is it helps the results of the treatment last longer.
How Long the Results Last
After extensive clinical trials, researchers have proven that the results of Dysport injections can easily last half of a year. The durability of the results is another advantage this treatment has over alternatives. Other injections designed to relax your muscles may require follow-up treatments four times annually.
Again, exercising the targeted muscles will both hasten your final results and increase their durability. Here are other factors that affect the durability of your results:
The Severity of the Wrinkles
During your initial consultation, we will assess the severity of the wrinkles so we can determine how long the final results of your treatment will last. Since deeper wrinkles and folds are caused by the hyperactivity of stronger muscles, the final results of treatment won’t last quite as long as the results of treatment for fine lines and moderate wrinkles.
For example, if you’re treating mild-to-moderate lines or wrinkles around your eyes, temples, mouth, or jawline, your results will easily remain satisfactory for six months. If you’re targeting deeper wrinkles and folds around the nose, forehead, or eyebrows, your results may only last four to six months. In a minute, we’ll discuss what you can do to extend the final results of your treatment regardless of the severity of your wrinkles.
The Frequency of Treatment
The frequency of treatment also plays a significant role in how long the final results of treatment will last. The lines, wrinkles, and folds that can be treated with neurotoxic protein injections are caused by muscle hyperactivity. Remember, this treatment works by blocking the neurotransmitter responsible for causing muscle movement. You’ll still be able to move your muscles, but they will move normally; they will no longer be hyperactive.
Since this treatment stops muscle hyperactivity in its tracks, the treated muscles won’t be “exercised” as much. As a result, they will slowly weaken. After four to six months of your muscles being used normally, they will be significantly weaker than they were before your treatment. This translates into wrinkles that aren’t as deep the next time you need to come in for treatment. Several regular sessions will result in needing smaller doses and less frequent treatments.
The Skill of the Injector
One of the most significant factors that affect how long the results of treatment will last, and how quickly they will appear, is the skill of the injector. All three of our physicians have undergone extensive education and training and are fully qualified to administer these injections. They are very familiar with the underlying muscle structure of the face and know the best locations and depths to inject the medication for the best results.
The Quality of the Medication
The quality of the drug is another very significant factor affecting how long the results of treatment will last. Just like the drugs and supplements in your medicine cabinet lose potency when exposed to prolonged heat, humidity, or light, Dysport becomes significantly less effective when it is not stored properly. We handle all doses with care, storing them in a cool, dark, dry place. Rest assured each dose you receive will be as effective as it should be.
The Dose of the Medication
The dose of the medication also affects how long the final results of your treatment will last. Larger doses relax the muscles more and the muscles will stay relaxed longer. However, extending the length of your treatment results is not as simple as injecting you with massive doses of medication.
After all, your muscles still need to be functional enough that your facial expressions look natural and are not impeded. This is another example of the importance of a skilled, qualified injector. We can assess the severity of your muscle hyperactivity and identify the strongest dose that will provide the most durable results while keeping your facial expressions looking natural.
The Lifestyle of the Individual Treated
Your lifestyle is another incredibly significant factor affecting how long the results of your treatment will last. Research has shown that individuals who engage in cardiovascular exercises more than five times weekly need follow-up treatments more regularly. If your job is physically intense, but you still want to work out on your days off, aim for exercises that are mild-to-moderate in intensity rather than high in intensity.
If you have a job that is not physically demanding, and you want the results of your treatment to last as long as possible, don’t perform high-intensity exercises more than five times weekly. If you engage in high-intensity physical activity more than five times weekly, you will need follow-up sessions more frequently. Only you can decide if you can sacrifice a workout session or two per week for results that last longer.
Good Candidates for This Treatment
There are several things we look at when determining who is a good candidate for this treatment. Among the things we look at are your medical history, your current health, the cause of the wrinkles you are trying to treat, and the severity of the wrinkles you are trying to treat. Let’s take a closer look at some of the factors we assess.
The first thing we will look at to determine if you are a good candidate for treatment with this medication is your age. According to the FDA, injections with this medication should only be received by individuals who are at least 18 years of age. If you are not yet 18, you will need to find an alternative solution to your cosmetic concerns until you turn 18.
While the FDA has not stated that individuals over a certain age shouldn’t receive this treatment, we recommend it for individuals who are younger than 66 years old. By the time you’ve reached the age of 66, there’s a very good chance that your wrinkles and folds are so deep that the results of treatment won’t last very long. You may need an alternative anti-aging solution, like a facelift, to achieve the durable, dramatic results you want.
Your Medical History
If you are between the ages of 18 and 65, we will next take a look at your medical history. Since this treatment is non-invasive, it is appropriate for nearly everyone. However, there are a few medical conditions that may prevent you from being considered a good candidate for treatment.
For example, you will not be considered a good candidate for this drug if you are allergic or sensitive to the protein found in cow’s milk. Furthermore, neurotoxic protein injections are not ideal for individuals who suffer from neurological or muscular conditions, such as:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Myasthenia gravis
- Lambert-Eaton syndrome
Your Current Health
If your medical history is clean, we will look at your current health. To be considered a good candidate for this treatment, the skin around your targeted treatment area should be clear. It should be free from sunburn, acne, oral herpes, rosacea, or other active skin conditions. You should also hold off on treatment if you have had a viral or bacterial infection within two weeks of your desired treatment date.
Two other reasons you should hold off on treatment are pregnancy and nursing. No clinical trials have been run to discover how if at all, this medication affects a fetus or nursing infant. However, we believe it is best to err on the side of caution. Therefore, we cannot recommend this treatment to any woman who is breastfeeding, pregnant, may be pregnant, or actively trying to conceive.
How to Prepare for Treatment
Preparation for this treatment is simple. The most important thing you can do to prepare for your treatment session is to drink at least a quart of alkaline water and eat at least one healthy meal on the day of your treatment. You will see the results of your treatment faster if your body is adequately hydrated and has all of the nutrients it needs. Furthermore, you should avoid drinking alcohol in the 24 hours leading up to your treatment.
What Else to Avoid Before Treatment
Drugs you should avoid before treatment include blood-thinning medications, like ibuprofen, Warfarin, and Marplan. Nutritional supplements that can thin the blood include garlic, vitamin E, fish oil, Ginkgo Biloba, and ginger. We will provide you with a comprehensive list of drugs and nutritional supplements to avoid during your initial consultation.
Other drugs you should avoid before treatment include those that affect your muscles. For example, you should discontinue the use of muscle relaxants in the 72 hours before your treatment. If you take magnesium citrate supplements, a natural muscle relaxant, daily, ask your primary care physician if it is safe for you to stop taking this supplement in the three days before your scheduled injections.
