Rhinoplasty, or surgery that is used to reshape, reduce or augment a person’s nose, is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. With rhinoplasty, a plastic surgeon can narrow the width of the nostrils, remove a hump, change the relation between the nose and mouth and generally make the nose’s appearance more appealing.
Rhinoplasty has other uses that can correct health issues. Patients with birth defects that affect the nose can benefit from plastic surgery. The procedure can also be used to correct problems with breathing and the airway. Rhinoplasty performed for health reasons may be covered by your medical insurance.
we generally perform two variations of the rhinoplasty procedure. In one we operate on the airways and in the other we do not. Rhinoplasty is meant to reshape the nose while septoplasty works with the partition inside the nose. When possible, the Rhinoplasty will be endonasal, or closed surgery, where the incision is hidden inside the nose. In open rhinoplasty the incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip that separates the nostrils. In this case, the skin of the nose can be pulled back to allow your doctor greater access to perform more complicated and precise work.
Nasal surgery is performed under anesthesia. Depending on the requirements of the procedure, this could be either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Your plastic surgeon will then begin the work of reshaping the nose by removing or repositioning bone and cartilage, and sometimes adding cartilage grafts, possibly from the septum or even the ear. Once the reshaping is complete, the skin and tissue are replaced and the incision is closed. Nasal surgery is usually an outpatient procedure that can take one or two hours to complete.
We typically perform two types of rhinoplasty: one that focuses purely on reshaping the nose for aesthetic reasons, and another that addresses both form and function, often involving correction of the nasal airways. When a deviated septum is involved, septoplasty may be performed alongside rhinoplasty to improve breathing.
In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. This technique is ideal for patients requiring less complex adjustments and offers reduced recovery time, swelling, and scarring.
For more detailed or advanced nasal reshaping, open rhinoplasty may be necessary. This involves a small incision across the columella—the tissue between the nostrils—allowing the surgeon to lift the nasal skin and gain full access to the underlying structures for greater precision.
In the first week following surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising around the eyes, and mild discomfort. A nasal splint will be worn for about 5–7 days to support the new structure and minimize movement. Most patients feel well enough to resume light daily activities within a few days, although strenuous activity should be avoided.
Swelling gradually decreases over the next few weeks, but subtle swelling may persist for several months—especially at the tip of the nose. It’s important to follow all post-operative care instructions, sleep with your head elevated, and avoid touching or bumping your nose to support optimal healing.
While you’ll notice visible improvements soon after the splint is removed, the final shape of your nose takes time to refine. Full results can take up to a year as the nasal tissues continue to settle. Routine follow-ups with your surgeon ensure healing is on track and expectations are met.

I am 5 days after my Lipo section procedure and I see results already!!!! I have seen few doctors before Dr. Barnavon all by recommendations. I have decided to go with Dr. Barnavon because his office is clean and new, the staff are so nice and welcoming. He explained from the beginning what we can do and what the results will look like by not necessarily promising me something that won't happen. The nurses are very professional and explained everything in regard of the surgery and what to expect after, also followed up with me the next day. I am so happy already and excited even more to see the results in the near future.
Initial swelling and bruising typically subside within the first two weeks, but subtle swelling can last for several months. Most patients return to work or school within 7–10 days. Final results may take up to a year as the nose continues to refine.
In closed (endonasal) rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella, which usually heals well and becomes virtually unnoticeable over time.
Most patients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate. Pain is generally well-controlled with prescribed medication for the first few days. A feeling of pressure or congestion is more common than sharp pain.
Light activities can resume after two weeks, but patients are advised to avoid vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, or any contact sports for at least 4–6 weeks to ensure proper healing.
Yes. When performed in conjunction with septoplasty or other airway procedures, rhinoplasty can correct structural issues and improve nasal airflow, enhancing both function and appearance.
