Recession and Plastic Surgery

The last few years have seen impressive gains for the plastic surgery industry. The recession in 2008 caused a bit hit to the plastic surgery industry as it did to many other industries. In 2009, roughly 77 percent of plastic surgeons believed that the poor state of the economy was responsible for the drop in breast augmentation procedures from the year before. Many plastic surgeons coped by offering more noninvasive procedures that less financially confident consumers could afford. However, as the economy has recovered, so have the plastic surgery numbers.

According to the ASAPS (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) more than 10 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in 2014, bringing in over $12 billion for both invasive and noninvasive cosmetic surgeries. There has been an especially large increase in cosmetic surgery for men, with both surgical and nonsurgical procedures increasing around 43 percent over the last five years. Two of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in 2014 were buttock augmentation, which increased by a stunning 86 percent, and labiaplasty, which grew by 49 percent. Additionally, there were 342,949 liposuction procedures, 286,694 breast augmentation surgeries, 165,714 eyelid surgeries, 164,021 tummy tuck procedures and 145,909 nose surgeries. These five surgical procedures were by far the most popular cosmetic surgeries for both men and women last year.

Although noninvasive procedures became more popular alternatives immediately following the recession, many of them remain popular due to the fact that they are not only more affordable but also because they aren’t invasive. The more popular of these noninvasive procedures in 2014 included Botox (botulinum toxin), hair removal procedures and chemical peels.
