What Is the Right Age for Plastic Surgery?

There are things about our appearance we’d all like to change or fix. Being bothered to the point of distraction or experiencing a lack of self-confidence because of these imperfections isn’t something you have to just grin and bear. If you’re ready to talk through your options, call the Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida in Hollywood, FL to find out more about plastic surgery Hollywood FL.

What Is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that involves the reconstruction, restoration or alteration of the body. There are two specialties within this medical discipline: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Surgeons can specialize in just one discipline or both types and often do. Reconstructive plastic surgery is done on abnormal structures of the body caused by:

  • Disease
  • Trauma
  • Infection
  • Congenital anomalies
  • Tumors
  • Developmental abnormalities

Cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is done to reshape or repair otherwise normal structures of the face. This kind of surgery can be done on the face or body wherever the patient is experiencing an aesthetic concern.

What Is the Right Age for Plastic Surgery?

Because there are so many types of plastic surgery available, there is no specific age that’s better than another. Most surgeons agree that it’s best to not focus on the age of the patient but rather on their needs and concerns.

Some procedures do have average age ranges for best results, but this can vary between patients. We’ll explore the popular surgeries and for whom they’re a good fit.

Facelift

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a procedure that can counteract the effects of aging. There is no one size fits lift because each patient’s needs are different. What makes this such a popular procedure is the level of customization each lift can provide. There are three types of facelifts available:

Traditional Facelift

In this type of facelift, small incisions are made that allow your surgeon to sculpt and redistribute fat in the face, jowls, and neck. Your surgeon can reposition facial tissue in the deeper layers of the skin and lift the muscles to provide more youthful contours. The outer skin is then re-draped over the newly sculpted contours and the excess skin is trimmed away.

Each surgeon has a different philosophy, but the most successful facelifts are done by surgeons who want to lift and not stretch the face. The most skilled surgeons will ensure the incisions are hidden in inconspicuous places like natural folds on the face or ears or hidden by the hairline.

Mini Facelift

This is a great alternative to a traditional lift that targets lifting wrinkles and sagging skin in the lower part of the face. Smaller incisions are made, so this lift cannot address the level of skin laxity a traditional lift does.

Neck Lift

This lift addressed jowls, sagging neck skin, and submental fat or the fat that accumulates under the chin. This is a great procedure for people who are dissatisfied with their profile and how excess skin and severe skin laxity ages their appearance. A neck lift can be combined with other procedures to produce the overall desired result.

While they can do this on anybody experiencing drooping skin and features, the most successful facelifts are done on men and women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job” involves reshaping, reducing, or augmenting a patient’s nose. If you are unhappy with the shape of your nose, talk to your surgeon about this surgery. Rhinoplasty is also used to correct health issues and help patients breathe better from their noses. During this surgery, your doctor can change:

  • The width of the nose
  • A profile affected by a visible hump or depression
  • A drooping or upturned nasal tip
  • The size of a nose that out of proportion to the face
  • Wide nostrils
  • Asymmetry

Because irregularities on the nose can affect anyone and be a hindrance to self-confidence, anyone over the age of 18 is a good candidate for successful rhinoplasty as long as their bones have stopped growing.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty can reverse the appearance of tired-looking or saggy eyelids. This sagging can get so bad it can impair a patient’s vision. Age is a common cause of sagging eyelids, though genetics can increase their likelihood and cause them to appear earlier for some patients. This can occur on both the upper and lower lids.

Talk to your doctor about this procedure if you have:

  • Eyelids that interfere with your vision
  • Lower lids that sag below the iris
  • Excessive skin on the lower lids
  • Droopy upper lids
  • Dark bags or hollow troughs below the eyes

Anyone can be bothered by drooping eyelids but, generally, this affects people over 35. Under-eye bags can be an inherited trait, so people may want to have this treated as early as their 20s.

Breast Augmentation

There are several reasons patients give for seeking this procedure. One is to simply increase breast size, which may boost self-esteem. This procedure also gives symmetry to uneven breasts so clothes are more flattering and a woman can feel confident about her appearance.

Whatever a woman’s reason for wanting breast augmentation, a discussion with her doctor about her desired results can help her surgeon develop a plan that will get the results she’s looking for. Women of almost any age are good candidates, but it’s a good idea to wait until the breasts have fully developed at around age 18 before having surgery.

Breast Lift

When a woman ages, has lost a significant amount of weight, or has breastfed children, she may notice her breasts aren’t as perky as they used to be. There are several types of breast lifts, or mastopexies, available, and the right type for you depends on several factors:

  • Body type
  • Amount and condition of tissue present
  • The amount of lift desired
  • The incisions used
  • Whether augmentation will also be done

A woman can choose to simply have a lift, which reshapes the breast while lifting and removing excess skin, or a lift with augmentation. This combination can lift and fill out the breasts simultaneously. This is a good choice for women of any age who are experiencing sagging breasts, though it is most successful in women who feel they are done having children or who have already lost the amount of weight they’d like.

Breast Reduction

Whether your breasts are larger than you’d aesthetically like or they’re causing you physical discomfort, a breast reduction can get you amazing results. Breasts that are too large for a woman’s frame can cause:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Bad posture
  • Breathing problems
  • Stretch marks
  • Discomfort or irritation during exercise
  • Constant skin irritation under the breasts

This procedure involves removing fat, glandular tissue and skin from large breasts. Because excess skin is being removed, a woman will experience a breast lift with a reduction. Any age when a woman feels physically uncomfortable because of the size and position of her breasts or feels self-conscious about the size of her breasts is appropriate for this procedure.

Tummy Tuck

If you have excess skin or fat on your abdomen and would like a tighter or more toned appearance, a tummy tuck, with or without liposuction, is a good way to achieve the contour you’ve always wanted or once had. If you choose liposuction with a tummy tuck, excess fat will be removed before excess skin. The result is a slimmer and healthier contour.

For women who have lost a significant amount of weight or have been pregnant and want to get rid of excess skin, a tummy tuck without liposuction can offer great results. There is no target age, but if a woman wants a tummy tuck to remove loose skin because of pregnancy, she might want to wait until she’s done having kids so the skin doesn’t get stretched again after this procedure.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of unwanted fat and plays a major role in reshaping the body. Stubborn and excess fat can be addressed almost anywhere on the body through liposuction. The best candidates are at a stable weight and in generally good health.

Liposuction can be performed in these areas:

  • Hips
  • Back
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Abdomen
  • Calves
  • Upper arms
  • Chin

Anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight but still has stubborn areas of fat is a great candidate. People at a healthy weight but can’t budge certain pockets of fat should consider this procedure. It’s important to note that this is not a weight loss treatment but should be used to supplement weight loss.

Treatments

If you’ve already had plastic surgery to address your major areas of concern, are looking for complementary treatments or aren’t yet ready for surgical intervention, there are still great anti-aging treatments available. Some of the most popular treatments are injectables.

Neuromodulators

These are best known by their brand names of Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. These have become the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world because they’re fast, easy and produce amazing results. The most common use of these injectables is to temporarily reduce the appearance of dynamic or expression wrinkles.

These are the wrinkles etched into our skin from a lifetime of making expressions. Over time, our faces will develop lines that stay put even when we’re not making any expression. This can make us look angry or upset when we’re not and it ages our appearance. Consider a neuromodulator for:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Bunny lines on the side of the nose

Dermal Fillers

Fillers are one of the most commonly performed treatments because they offer immediate results and can take years off someone’s appearance in a matter of minutes. There are many fillers on the market today, so it’s important to talk over your areas of concern and the results you like so your doctor can recommend the right filler for you. Each one is formulated a little differently and can perform a different function.

Most fillers use hyaluronic acid, suspended in a pliable gel, for natural-looking results. Talk to your doctor about dermal fillers if you would like to address:

  • Moderate to severe lines, wrinkles and folds
  • Areas of lost volume in the face and hands
  • Thinning lips
  • Down-turned corners of the mouth
  • Asymmetrical features
