Lasers vs Facelift

There are numerous reasons why a person might want to get cosmetic surgery for their face. Maybe the patient has more wrinkles than they would like and surgery would help to remove those wrinkles, thereby helping them improve their confidence. Maybe the patient was involved in an accident in which the skin on their face was scarred or damaged in some way and they want to restore their face to how it looked prior to the accident. Whatever the reason, patients have two main options when it comes to cosmetic surgery for the face – lasers and facelifts.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

This procedure is often known as a laser peel as well. The method uses laser vaporization and lasabrasion technology that gives plastic surgeons precise control. The way it works is that the surgeon will send out short  pulsating beams at irregular skin in order to remove damaged or unwanted skin a single layer at a time. In addition to removing this outer layer of skin (known as the epidermis), the laser will also heat the underlying skin, thereby promoting its growth. Laser skin resurfacing is often used to treat scars from acne and chickenpox, remove liver spots, remove warts and more.

Facelift

A facelift, which is known as rhytidectomy, is a procedure that is meant to counteract the effects of aging as well as sun exposure and stress. The procedure involves removing fat from the neck and other parts of the patient’s face and then tightening their facial muscles and skin in order to give them a more youthful appearance. The surgeons at Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida perform face lifts in three areas, the upper face, middle face and lower face. The upper face is the area that includes the forehead, brow and eyes. The middle face consists of the nose and cheeks. The lower face includes the neck, chin and mouth. The procedures involves lifting the face and not stretching it, thereby avoiding the artificial look of stretching the skin back.

Laser surgery tends to be used more in order to remove scars and blemishes, whereas facelifts consist of procedures that help to get rid of sagging skin and wrinkles in order to provide a more youthful appearance.
