Understanding the Recovery Stages Following Breast Augmentation Surgery

When women have concerns about the size or shape of their breasts, breast augmentation can be used to address these concerns. For many individuals, this surgery can be a key step in the process of achieving their ideal body image. Deciding to have a breast augmentation is a big step, and it is important to have a plastic surgeon that you trust to guide you through the process.

At Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida in Hollywood, FL, we are committed to providing services that allow our patients to be comfortable and informed throughout the whole process. If you are considering a breast augmentation, we can help you to know more about the recovery stages following surgery and what you can expect after your procedure from immediate post-op care to long-term healing.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that increases the size of a woman’s breasts and enhances the shape. This is typically accomplished through the placement of implants. It can be used for patients who have small breasts or for patients who have uneven breast size that they would like to address.

Breast Augmentation Options

When it comes to choosing breast implants, there are many different types to choose from. The two most common are silicone and saline breast implants. Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater while silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel.

If you are looking for an option that will provide you with full and rounded breasts or you want implants that eliminate the possibility of a silent rupture, saline implants may be right for you. They are also easy to customize since they are filled while in your body, and they typically require a smaller incision.

Silicone implants offer a more natural-feeling result than saline and come in many different sizes and shapes. We offer round saline implants as well as teardrop-shaped implants that have a firmer and more cohesive texture.

The Breast Augmentation Surgery Process

During a breast augmentation, we will first make an incision through which the breast implant is placed. At our practice, we can place this incision in different locations including under the breasts, in the armpit, or along the edge of the areola. Incision placement may be based on many factors including the preference of the patient, the size of the implant, patient anatomy, and more.

Next, a cavity is made for the implant, which is inserted behind the breast either on top of or underneath the muscles. The implants are filled if necessary and adjusted until the desired result is achieved. Then the incisions are closed, and the area is wrapped and dressed to protect it.

The Recovery Process

Immediately Post-Operation

As soon as your surgery is complete, you will move to a recovery room to wake from the anesthesia and rest before we send you home. You may have a little soreness and feel tired for a few days, but you will quickly begin to recover. Soreness can be managed through oral medications if needed. You will need to wear a surgical bra to keep your breasts in a good position while your body heals and adjusts to the implants.

The First Few Weeks

You may still have some swelling for a time after your surgery, but many people are able to return to work after a week or two depending on the type of work they do. Certain activities such as upper body exercises and leaning over may need to be avoided still. You should always consult your doctor about adding any activities post-operatively.

Long-Term Recovery

Your long-term recovery will depend on the type of surgery that was performed. Those who have their implants placed under the muscle may need to avoid strenuous exercises for longer than those who have implants over the muscle. After six to eight weeks, you should be feeling more like yourself, and after several months, you will be able to see the full results of your implants as they settle into the natural shape of your body.

Tips for a Successful Recovery From Breast Augmentation

Successfully navigating breast augmentation recovery is a partnership between the patient and the surgeon. In order to facilitate a successful and smooth recovery, you should plan to:

  • Follow all post-op instructions
  • Rest and recuperate
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet
  • Wear your surgical bra or compression bandage as directed
  • Attend all follow-up appointments
  • Limit alcohol and smoking
  • Call your surgeon with any concerns

Can Breast Augmentation Be Combined With Other Surgeries?

Breast augmentation can be well-suited for combining with other surgeries. A breast lift and augmentation are often performed together since augmentation surgery can only address the size rather than the placement of the breasts. It may also be combined with a tummy tuck procedure. You can talk to your surgeon to discuss whether they recommend combined procedures in your situation.
