How to See if You’ll Qualify for Eyelid Surgery: A Comprehensive Guide

If you have noticed that you appear tired even when you’re well rested, or if you are unhappy with the appearance of your eyelids, you may be wondering whether you are a good fit for eyelid surgery. At Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida, we work hard to pair our patients with the treatments that will best serve them.

If you are in Hollywood, FL and you are considering a blepharoplasty, you can schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon to determine your candidacy for the procedure.

What Is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can lift or otherwise change the appearance of the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. This surgery can be used to correct vision problems from heavy lids or can be used as a cosmetic procedure to make the eyes and eyelids appear more youthful, less wrinkled, and less tired. During a blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat may be removed from the eyelids and they may be placed into a more pleasing position.

What Types of Blepharoplasty Are There?

  • Upper Eyelid Surgery: Also called an upper blepharoplasty, this surgery is performed on the upper eyelids to help correct hooded eyes or other concerns. Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid to help hide the scar.
  • Lower Eyelid Surgery: The lower blepharoplasty or lower eyelid surgery can correct concerns that are happening under the eyes such as wrinkling and under-eye bags. Incisions can be made on the inside of the lid or on the lash line, making the scars unnoticeable.
  • Double Eyelid Surgery: A double eyelid surgery can be used to create a crease on the upper eyelid where there is no crease or where it is less defined.

Individuals Who May Qualify for Eyelid Surgery

Patients With Excess Skin on the Eyelids

If you have excess skin on your eyelids, it can cause you to look tired even when you feel awake, and it can sometimes even interfere with your vision. If you have excess skin either above or below your eyelids, you may qualify for eyelid surgery

Patients With Bags Under the Eyes

Bags under the eyes can form when the skin becomes less elastic and begins to sag. They can also be associated with lack of sleep or smoking. Some people have this feature even when they are younger as a genetic trait. Whatever the cause, if you are unhappy with the bags under your eyes, you may be a candidate for a lower blepharoplasty.

Patients With Droopy Eyelids

If you have eyelids that are drooping into your field of vision or even making it more difficult for you to put makeup on, blepharoplasty may be right for you. With upper eyelid surgery, we can remove excess skin and lift the eyelid so that your eyes appear more open and awake and you have a restored field of vision.

Patients Who Are in Good Health

Even if you have one of the above concerns regarding your eyelids, eyelid surgery may not be right for you if you are in poor health. Blepharoplasty is indicated for individuals who are in good health with a lower risk of complications after surgery. A conversation with your doctor is the best way to determine if surgery is right for you.

Patients With Realistic Expectations of Results

Like any other type of surgery, blepharoplasty surgery should be done with the right expectations of results. At our practice, we acquaint all of our patients with the results that they can expect by going over our gallery of eyelid surgery before and after photos. When you come for a consultation, we will discuss the concerns you have and talk about what you may be able to expect after surgery.

Patients Who Are Non-Smokers

Smoking can increase certain risks during surgery and slow down the healing process. The best candidates for any type of surgery are often patients who are non-smokers or who have agreed to stop smoking before and after the procedure. Again, you should always discuss your situation with your doctor.

What to Expect From Your Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a relatively fast procedure that can be done as an outpatient procedure. When it is time for your procedure, an injection near the surgery area will be given to numb the area. Then your surgeon will make the incisions in a hidden area.

During the surgery, excess skin will be removed from the upper or lower eyelids. Excess fat may also be taken from certain areas. This fat can also be transferred to locations where you are lacking fat. Once this is done, the incisions can be closed and the surgery will be complete. Most surgeries take an hour to complete.

Once the surgery is done, you will be guided through the recovery process. You may have some swelling and bruising, but we will let you know exactly how to take care of your incisions and the rest of the surgical site. You will have follow-up appointments with us so we can check on your recovery process.
