Is a Tummy Tuck Permanent?

Millions of people struggle with excess skin and fat tissue in the stomach area. This can cause a lot of self-consciousness, especially for women and men who are already struggling with their body image. At Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida in Hollywood, FL, we offer tummy tuck surgery to help get rid of that excess skin and fat tissue in the stomach area. This surgery is incredibly effective at giving patients the results they desire.

Is a Tummy Tuck Permanent?

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery used to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can be performed on both men and women.Tummy tucks are usually considered to be a permanent solution to problems with excess skin and fat in the abdominal area.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the results are not necessarily permanent. Factors such as age, dramatic weight fluctuations, and pregnancy can all affect the long-term results of abdominoplasty.

Preparation for Surgery

1. Get Organized

As you get ready for your abdominoplasty, it is essential to take some time to get organized. First, make sure you have loose-fitting clothes that will be comfortable after your surgery. You may also need someone to stay with you for the first few days after your procedure.

It is also a good idea to have someone lined up to drive you home from our surgical center. Finally, take some time to do a little shopping in advance. Stock items like food that is easy to prepare. By taking these steps, you can help ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

2. Avoid Smoking

Smoking increases your risk of wound infection, delays healing, and can cause serious respiratory problems. For these reasons, it is essential that you quit smoking at least two weeks before your abdominoplasty.

Additionally, you should refrain from smoking for at least two weeks after surgery. This will give your body the time it needs to heal properly. If you are not able to quit smoking completely, you should at least reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day. Doing so will help to minimize your risks and ensure a successful recovery.

3. Avoid Taking Certain Medications and Supplements

These medications and supplements include anything that can thin your blood or increase bleeding as well as anything that can cause stomach upset or nausea. Here’s a more complete list of what to avoid:

Aspirin and Other Blood Thinners

Aspirin is perhaps the most well-known blood thinner, but there are many others, including ibuprofen, naproxen, heparin, warfarin, and more. It’s crucial to avoid these medications for two reasons: first, because they can thin your blood and increase bleeding during surgery; and second, because they can increase the risk of bruising after surgery.

Stomach-Upset Medications

There are a number of medications that can cause stomach upset or nausea, including antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and more. It’s best to avoid these in the days leading up to your surgery so you don’t have any issues with nausea during or after the procedure.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements such as ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng, and St. John’s wort can thin your blood and increase bleeding during surgery. They can also interfere with other medications you may be taking.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a type of medication used to relieve pain and inflammation. NSAIDs includes over-the-counter medications like naproxen. Similar to aspirin, NSAIDs can cause excessive bleeding during surgery.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that helps to control cell damage and support the immune system. However, excessive intake of vitamin E can also thin the blood, which can cause excessive bleeding during surgery. It’s vital to stop taking vitamin E supplements at least two weeks before any planned surgical procedure. In addition, patients should avoid using products that contain vitamin E, such as lotions or creams, in the area around the incision site.

4. Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol consumption can cause dehydration, which can lead to an increased risk of complications during surgery. Additionally, alcohol can interfere with the body’s ability to heal properly, delaying the recovery process.

5. Choose the Right Surgeon

When it comes to your body, you should never settle for less than the best. When choosing a surgeon to perform your abdominoplasty, it is crucial to select someone who is board certified and has extensive experience with this procedure. At Plastic Surgery Specialists of South Florida, our team of experienced plastic surgeons operates under the guidance of our lead surgeon, Dr. Yoav Barnavon.

Dr. Yoav Barnavon is a leading authority in the field of plastic surgery. With over 22 years of experience, he has helped countless patients achieve their aesthetic goals in South Florida. We understand that this is a big decision, and we are confident that we can provide you with the high level of care and attention that you deserve.

Surgery

Abdominoplasty is a major operation that requires a high level of skill and experience. The procedure can be performed under either local or general anesthesia, and the choice of anesthesia will be based on the individual patient’s needs and preferences. Once the patient is anaesthetised, the surgeon will make a long incision in the lower abdomen, from one hipbone to the other.

The skin and fat tissue will then be lifted away from the underlying muscles, and any excess skin will be trimmed away. The remaining skin will be pulled tight and re-attached to the surrounding tissues. Finally, the incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches, and a drainage tube may be inserted to help reduce swelling. The whole procedure usually takes between one and four hours to complete.

Post-Surgery Care

1. Drink Plenty of Fluids

Drinking plenty of fluids following surgery helps your body flush out toxins and heal properly. Stick to water, juice, and other clear liquids for the first few days, then gradually add in light soups.

2. Take Prescribed Pain Medication As Directed

You will likely be prescribed pain medication to help manage discomfort in the days following your surgery. Be sure to take it as directed by the doctor in order to keep pain under control while allowing your body to heal properly.

3. Keep Your Incisions Clean and Dry

Keeping your surgical incisions clean and dry will help prevent infection. The doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions, which may include using an antibacterial ointment or wrap. Follow these instructions carefully.

4. Avoid Strenuous Activity or Exercise

While exercise is important for overall health, we recommend avoiding anything too strenuous in the first few weeks following surgery. Walking is fine, but avoid lifting any heavy objects or participating in high-impact activities until the doctor gives you the green light.

5. Wear Loose Fitting Clothing

After surgery, you’ll want to wear loose fitting clothing that doesn’t put any undue pressure on your stomach area while it heals. This may mean avoiding tight-fitting jeans or form-fitting tops for a little while.

6. Eat Small, Light Meals That Are High in Protein

Protein is essential for healing and rebuilding damaged tissue. Fat and fiber can contribute to inflammation, bloating, and delay healing. In addition, when you eat large meals, your stomach has to work harder to digest the food. This can lead to nausea, vomiting, and bloating. It can also increase the risk of developing a hernia.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Abdominoplasty is an effective treatment for individuals who have loose skin due to weight loss or pregnancy as well as those who have excess fat in the abdominal area. Candidacy is typically determined during your initial consultation. During this appointment, we will assess your individual goals and physical condition to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. In general, a good candidate should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the results of surgery.
